MEET THE POETS

BEYOND THE YONDER is both the title of a book of youth poetry, a poetry and exchange project supported by the British Council, and a process of youth using poetry to transcend the barriers in their environment, and reach towards their aspirations. Poetry is very important in community publishing, especially with young people, as it enables them to discover their unique identity, develop courage, explore relationships and the wider environment, and assert their rights and assume their responsibilities.

Poetry has the power to break the silence surrounding violence and oppression, to move people deeply and motivate them to act. As young poets said: "Poetry is a powerful tool for healing and transformation, through creativity rather than dry information or slogans. Poetry lights up pathways to new

possibilities."

ACPD has published two books of poetry by young people. In addition, almost every book contains poetry.

Poetry was used in constitution making, and reducing all forms of violence. It has made the young poets widely and positively influential in Zimbabwe. And they are beginning to explore international horizons, such as participating in the BEING HEARD PROJECT in the SVRI GLOBAL FORUM in Rio de Janeiro in September 2017,and planning an exchange visit to meet creative and activist youth in Edinburgh in February 2018. ACPD has been very privileged to have the guidance and mentorship of Irish poet Joseph Woods during 2017. Apart from having published several books of poetry, he was Director of Poetry Ireland for many years.

In future this site will include some practical guidelines on poetry as well as profiling new poetry.

BEYOND THE YONDER

Beyond the yonder

Lies infinity

Stretching boundlessly

For  eternity.

Amazing nature

Displaying the future

To us it nurtures

Till we mature.

Beyond the yonder

Lies the potential to

Discover yourself

Take a long nature walk.

Beyond the yonder

Lies who you are

Stop being a stranger to yourself

Let nature define you.

Beyond the yonder

Lies your self-realisation

And the good society.

Beyond the yonder

Beyond what we can imagine

Beyond what we can see

Beyond the physical me

Is a very powerful, creative me

That can only unfold

If I’m given the platform.

WHAT NEXT?

You have been raped

You have been emotionally abused

You have been bullied

You have been physically abused

The question is: What next?

Are you going to let it go?

And condemn another victim.

You could stop abuse

Are you going to keep quiet about it?

No fellow! Speak out! Dear

Do not fear your plea

Others will hear

Stop shedding that tear!

Do you know why he doesn’t want you to tell?

It’s not because he will kill you if you do

He is merely afraid of the power of your voice.

Your voices calls the justice you deserve

Your voice will help the next child

Your voice will keep you safe

Help will only come if you speak out

And be heard.

SINGING TO THE LIONS

Melodies so sweet

Music soothing enough to melt the stone heart

Songs so soft, softer than silk

Words so strong they make the knees weak.

A tune sung in harmony

A song sung in unity and confidence

All of us together, strictly for love

Approaching  the feared lion.

Soothing its much feared anger

Singing a song of love forgiveness and hope

A song which forgets yesterday’s woes

And carries tomorrow’s aspirations.

Let us join hands fellow brothers

Sisters mothers, fathers, aunts

Uncles, cousins, nephews, neighbours,

In this harmonious act

Of Singing to the Lions.

       The Bold

Adults, allow me to grow

Enable me to express myself

Enable me to participate and lead

Enable me to become who I want to be

Most importantly hear me first

Before you bring your suggestions

Be my inspiration and not my destruction

Lets join our minds and efforts and become one.

NEVER TOO LATE

What a beautiful pot it was

It’s now broken

It has lost all the water it contained

The water that gave life to many

The water that gave hope to many

The water that healed the sick

That water is all gone

But it’s never too late

To mend our pot again

Let’s work together

To join the fragments

Make the pot whole

Bring back the lost water

It’s never too late

To mend our pot.

UNLOCKING BOYHOOD AND MANHOOD

Boys and men

Let us search for the keys

To unshackle our hearts

To unlock our doors

And let people in.

Let us be true

To who we are deep within

Flesh and blood

Capable of feeling

Expressing and dealing with pain

Capable of tears hugs and laughter

Above all, capable of love

Of embracing and renewing the world.

Through peaceful gender balanced societies

Life is nothing more

Than finding the key

That unlocks every part of our hearts and souls.

THE OTHER SIDE

When the day looks gloomy

Don’t despair

The sun won’t hide forever.

When the tunnel seems too long

Keep walking till you get out

Because the whole world is not a tunnel

The path ahead may be mountainous

But remember, the earth has more flatland

than mountains.

Your loved ones might reject you

But bear in mind

Love itself is not dead.

You might be falling off a cliff

Take that as the moment to learn flying

Being in a desert

Does not mean

The world has no oceans.

If stranded in that ocean

Explore the sea bed and be a discoverer.

Quiet moments are not lonely moments

They are times given to plan ahead

A problem is not a blocker

But a step upward to change.

Whatever life throws at you

See the other side

See the brighter side

Nothing but yourself can stop you.

ASHES FOR BEAUTY

Kindest hearts have known the greatest pain

Brightest smiles the deepest sorrows

Free spirits the worst kind of bondage

Are you a victim or a conqueror?

Choose the lesson over the trial

Choose forgiveness over anger

Choose to love rather than hate.

What manner of beauty most suits you?

Your struggle is a training ground for fulfilment

You are just a diamond formed under pressure

The purest gold refined under fire.

Trade those ashes for beauty

It hasn’t killed you

That’s why you are stronger.
